I have a love/hate relationship with the word “said.”
I often feel using “said” is a cop-out. It’s boring and mundane, the “the” of the verb universe. The mind doesn’t even see it, passes right over it without a hitch of breath. I’ve tried to avoid using it at all costs.
However, in a Cozy Mystery when trying to slip pertinent facts passed on-alert readers, “said” can be used to hurry a sentence along. Rush the clue through the readers’ minds without so much as that hitch of breath.
It’s sly and wily.
I rather like that in a word.
Until tomorrow…
